About Maya

My name is Maya Martin. I am a creative writing major. I’m good at facilitating conversations, writing nonfiction, and working in multimedia. I’m also not a terrible poet, which fulfills the creative writing learning outcome to “write with insight, proficiency and originality in at least two creative genres (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and dramatic writing).” I am pursuing a career in journalism. By taking various electives, I’ve learned more about the history of certain countries and how we got here. I would say that by now, I can absolutely “identify, explain, and analyze global themes, processes and systems.” The most rewarding electives I’ve taken have been in acting, coding, and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. In my own major, I’ve learned about the importance of revision and learning from the greats. My creative writing courses drilled the focus of revision into me in answer to the learning outcome to “engage in a creative process that incorporates research, revision, and attention to form, audience, language, and context.”

I tend to tell first-years that even if they don’t know what they want to do after they graduate, they should choose the major that sounds like the most fun to them. Don’t take yourself too seriously. I know I picked what I loved without thinking about it too much. One day in Dr. Stamant’s Ethnic American Literature class two years ago, and I was sold.

This portfolio showcases the best of what I’ve worked on as an undergraduate student at Agnes Scott College, including creative writing, literary analysis essays, and a rundown of my professional work. Putting this portfolio together has also given me the chance to look back at everything I have accomplished here as a Creative Writing major and as a journalist. I have grown a lot since I came to campus as a first-year in 2017.
